The Smells, Bells and Senses of INDIA

Beautiful faces, rhythmic soundtracks and swooshes of bold colour are the memories I carry of India. I had the privilege to teach InterPlay in Mumbai and South Gujarat as part of a Cultural Peace Exchange earlier this year.

It was a surprising, life changing experience.

We often talk in the west of ‘unlocking’ the wisdom of the body, well in India it’s more like ‘unzipping’ it! People were so enthusiastic, open and engaging and hungry to create and express their lives.

Something inside me found huge relief and happiness in being in a culture that can truly relax with the different faces of humanity. I don’t know how the country holds together, but it does. It’s a mystery! The level of body wisdom exercised at an instinctual, intuitive level of going with the flow is astounding.

On return, several of us who had been travelling overseas decided we’d offer a Cross Cultural Conversations workshop and performance in Sydney to help us process our experiences and explore what is unique, what unites and the edges of difference in seeking to understand each other.

It was a great way to open up the stories that touched us and create art with what is.

May we keep exploring the life giving cultural threads between us.
